Character - The character is a woodworker who is crafting a world. He is this big man who works with tiny models. Because he has mastered his wood working craft, he is able to do work with grace and precision

Through out this process I tried to keep silhouettes and arcs that lead the eye in mind

This shot is from the 3D animated short Crafted

I was excited to do this shot because I got to challenge myself with all the twisting and turning, moving camera, avoiding obstacles, this being the longest shot I have ever done and how big my character is compared to world.

Reference

I did multiple references along with having fiends do some, such as just asking them to pour water, to see the different ways people do thing

This was done laying on a table because the character is much bigger than the world he is creating. In the shot you don't see his body and this was to simulate him hovering  above

This is for the volcano. At first no liquid was used but then I wanted to see how the weight of the liquid would effect the way the jar would be held.

Because this shot was so long my references were done in sections. Above are some examples of what I used and how I created reference for this shot

During this shot I reblocked and reworked how I went about it many times to try and achieve a flow that goes with the environment and camera movements.

I worked with slowins, slowouts, and bigger arcs to show his precision and grace as he swiftly moves around all the obstacles during the creation process

Column Progress

I blocked it all and then worked on the volcano section first to pass it off to effects while I work on the columns.

To create interest and depth I wanted the characters hand to move throughout different area of the screen/space. I chose to animate with the flow of the rocks in the direction I thought would feel more natural while adding a variety of diagonals, up and down, left and right.

Volcano Progress

Decided to include a second hand to show his precision

Silhouette was important to me while working with this shot which in parts was challenging with how many obstacles and effects were included.

Progress and Reference

This shot uses deformers and parenting

For this shot I chose one approach and then when I was told a different frame range for this shot I had a lot of fun adding more exaggerated slowins, slowouts, and different arcs and shapes.
